An old community inside the city
Echo Place was its own place before it was part of Brantford. It was incorporated in 1865, east of the city and built up around the Springbrook Hotel. The 1891 census recorded just 30 residents and three businesses, namely a general store that doubled as the post office, a nursery, and an oatmeal mill. In 1955 it was amalgamated into Brantford as the city expanded outward after the war.
That history is written into the housing. A neighbourhood absorbed during post-war expansion has a lot of stock from that period, and cladding from the fifties through the seventies is now decades past the point where it was expected to still be working. Aluminum from that era has chalked and dented, and early vinyl has gone brittle and faded unevenly.
What the streets are like
The character here is mature trees, wider lots, front porches and meandering sidewalks. It is a genuinely pleasant area to work in and it is also a set of specific exterior challenges. Porches and bay windows mean more corners, more trim and more flashing detail than a plain elevation. Older homes being renovated often turn out to have board sheathing and no housewrap once the old cladding comes off.
The tree cover is the other factor. Echo Place sits beside the Braneida Industrial Park, roughly 1,500 acres of zoned industrial and commercial land developed from the 1980s into the early 2000s. The park provides employment next door while Echo Place itself has stayed residential, which is a good arrangement for a neighbourhood.
