An old village with real building stock

St. George was founded in 1814 by Peter Bauslaugh and was known first as Bauslaugh Mills, after the sawmill. Obed Wilson built the first house that same year, Main Street began developing commercially in the 1820s when Henry Moe opened a business in a log building, and by 1832 the village had three churches. The 2021 census put the population at 3,354.

That timeline matters for exterior work because it means genuinely old buildings. The Adelaide Hunter Hoodless Homestead on Blue Lake Road is a one-and-a-half storey wood-frame farmhouse from around 1830, and it is a National Historic Site of Canada, designated in 1995. Sunnyside at 13 Main Street South is a three-storey red-brick Romanesque Revival house from about 1888, with a mansard roof and a corner tower, heritage-designated in 1981.

Working on stock of that age is not the same as working on a 1980s subdivision. Board sheathing, irregular framing, and no water-resistive barrier are all common, and every one of them changes how a wall gets rebuilt.

Orchard country

The land around St. George has been farmed for a very long time. Brantview Apples and Cider on Howell Road has been run by the Howell family for eight generations on land granted to Isaac Howell for his service in the War of 1812. Orchard Home Farm, an 80-acre apple and pear operation northwest of the village, has been going since 1949. The St. George Apple Fest has run for over 40 years and draws more than 120 vendors each September.
