An old settlement

Mount Pleasant is one of the earliest planned settlements in Upper Canada, with sections set apart for settlement around 1800, and it lies within the Grand River Tract granted to the Six Nations under Joseph Brant in 1784 by the Haldimand Deed. Land for the public cemetery was granted in 1802 and the first burial took place that same year.

The Mount Pleasant Cemetery, at the southwest corner of Mount Pleasant Road and Burtch Road, was designated by the County of Brant in 2006 under Part IV of the Ontario Heritage Act, with marble markers carrying the detailed carving typical of 19th-century stonework. Mount Pleasant was also the birthplace of Dr. Augusta Stowe-Gullen, the first woman to graduate in medicine in Canada, born here in 1857.

When Brant County was formed in 1851 it consisted of Brantford Township, taking in Brantford, Paris, Mount Pleasant and Cainsville.
