Two towns in one
Paris has a 19th-century core and a modern edge, and they need different things. The old town centre around Grand River Street holds buildings from the 1840s onward, including the largest single collection of cobblestone structures in North America. Twelve cobblestone homes and two cobblestone churches still stand, built between 1839 and the early 1860s after the mason Levi Boughton brought the technique from New York State and began laying stones pulled from the Grand River.
Those buildings are masonry and stay masonry. What they need from us is roofline work: soffit and fascia, eavestrough sized for their steep older roofs, and trim detailing that respects the building. St. James Anglican Church, built in 1839, is the oldest cobblestone church in Canada and stands a few minutes from houses of the same generation.
The other Paris is the one that grew after Highway 403 connected Hamilton and Woodstock and turned the town into a commuter base. The population went from about 8,600 in 1991 to 14,956 by 2021, and roughly 4,700 dwellings now sit in the town. Most of that newer stock is still on its original cladding, so the work is repair, upgrade and storm damage rather than replacement.
Working in a river town
Paris sits at the confluence of the Nith and the Grand, in a valley surrounded on three sides by the two rivers. The town takes about 992 mm of precipitation a year, with June the wettest month, and the valley soils go through repeated freeze-thaw cycles during the spring melt.
For an exterior that means water management is the whole game. Eavestrough capacity has to suit the actual roof rather than a default, and discharge has to be routed properly away from the building. On the older housing especially, water at the base of a wall through a freeze-thaw spring is what does the damage.
Heritage matters here
The County of Brant carries roughly 30 designated properties on its Heritage Register, and Paris holds a good share of them. Designation can affect what is permitted on the exterior. Can you side a cobblestone house?
The cobblestone walls themselves are masonry and are not clad. What those houses do need is soffit, fascia, eavestrough and trim work, and that has to be done sympathetically on a building of that age and value. We are careful about fastening and detailing on heritage masonry.
Are the newer Paris subdivisions different to work on?
Very. Paris grew from roughly 8,600 people in 1991 to nearly 15,000 by 2021, most of it after the Highway 403 link made commuting practical. Those homes are recent enough that the original cladding is still in service, so the work there tends to be storm repair, upgrades, and correcting builder-grade material rather than full replacement.
