The common faults
Leaking joints and end caps. Sealant fails long before the metal does, and the leak usually shows as staining on the fascia rather than as a visible drip. Resealing a sound joint is quick work.
Sagging runs. The trough drops between hangers, the fall reverses, and water sits in the low point instead of moving to the outlet. Standing water is heavy, and in winter it freezes, which accelerates the sag. Re-hanging with hidden hangers at correct spacing resets it.
Loose downspouts. Straps work loose, elbows separate, and the bottom section disappears entirely at some point over the years. A downspout that discharges halfway down the wall is worse than no downspout, because it concentrates the water in one spot against the cladding.
Water running behind the trough. Usually a missing drip edge letting water track back along the underside of the roof edge onto the fascia.
Where repair stops making sense
Aluminum trough does not last forever. Once the metal is pitted, the seals are failing in several places at once, and the hangers have chewed up the fascia, you are spending money to delay a replacement rather than to avoid one. Winter damage
Ice is the usual culprit for sudden failures here. When meltwater refreezes in a trough that is not draining, the expanding ice can push joints apart, bend the front lip, and pull hangers straight out of the fascia. That damage often shows up in February and gets noticed in April. If your trough came through the winter looking different, it is worth a look before spring rain finds the gap.

Can a leaking joint be repaired or does the whole run need replacing?
A single leaking joint or end cap is a straightforward repair. The question is whether the rest of the system is in the same condition. If one seal has reached the end of its life, the others of the same age usually are not far behind, so we look at all of them before quoting a single fix.
My trough sags in the middle. Can that be fixed?
Usually. A sag means the hangers have lost their grip or were spaced too far apart. Re-hanging on hidden hangers screwed into solid framing, at proper spacing and with the fall reset, fixes it, provided the fascia behind is still solid. If the fascia is soft, that is the real repair.
Water runs behind the trough instead of into it. Why?
Almost always missing or failed drip edge at the roof line. Water follows the underside of the shingle, and without a drip edge to break that path it curls back and runs down the fascia behind the trough. It is a small component and a common omission on older installations.
